The state of California is expected to become the first state to ban the sale of gas-powered yard equipment by 2024. With this ban, the lawn and landscape industry can expect to see an influx of new states and cities adopting similar legislation.

Benefits:

There are countless businesses that are forced to adapt to the growing prevalence of green legislation. However, many of them have found that there are benefits to be had with electric equipment.

  • Great Maneuverability:
    • Electric equipment today is powered by a rechargeable battery pack. This leads to lighter lawn mowers that are easier to maneuver, unload, and store. There are even models that fold up onto their charging docks!
  • Easy to Maintain:
    • Electric equipment has far fewer parts that would otherwise be a part of the engine. Their simplified lithium-ion batteries lead to far easier and more affordable maintenance.
  • Saves You Money:
    • With the rising cost of gasoline and oil, electric equipment alleviates expenditures as crews no longer need to refuel at the pump or use oil to maintain parts within gas-powered counterparts.
  • Easy Start-Up:
    • Electric equipment is easier to start with a single motion, and doesn’t require a full fine tune-up at the start of a season.
  • Cleaner for the Environment:

Limitations:

As with any product on the market, there are limitations to electric equipment. Many lawn care businesses have reported on limitations such as:

  • Shorter Run Times:
    • The lithium-ion batteries used to power your lawn equipment won’t last forever. This will require you to have spare batteries on the job, ready to be switched out to maintain efficient work.
  • Less Power:
    • In a well-maintained lawn, the power may be less noticeable. However, with lawns that have not been maintained and have tall grass or overgrown brush, limitations will be visible.
  • Big Job Limitations
    • Electric equipment has a difficult time maneuvering large lawns. In particular, those with hilly terrain.

As the electric equipment industry is still in its infancy, limitations that exist now have slowly begun to vanish. Check out 2023’s upcoming electric equipment compared to its gas-powered counterparts.
